OREANDA-NEWS. June 15, 2010. The territory for construction of converter station of Lithuanian and Swedish interconnection NordBalt lies in the vicinity of Klaipeda transformer substation. By this detailed plan a land has been formed, where it is planned to perform the reconstruction work of the existing substation and install an active power converter station of the interconnection with Sweden. The detailed plan was approved by the municipality council of Klaipeda region, following its revision and approval by the institutions, which had issued its technical conditions.

“We have successfully completed one of the significant stages of NordBalt project. Subsequent to the approval of the detailed plan an important goal was achieved: A specific territory was defined for the construction of the active power converter station of the interconnection with Sweden”, - said Mr. Arturas Vilimas, Director of Strategic Projects of Lietuvos Energija AB. 

The capacity of the link to be constructed – 700 MW. Line’s length – about 450 km. The NordBalt interconnection will composed of high voltage direct-current submarine and underground cables as well as converter stations in Lithuania and Sweden. This strategically important rapidly implemented NordBalt project is a significant step towards integration of power systems of Lithuania and the Baltic States into the power systems of the European Union.  This project is meant to enhance Lithuanian energy security and the reliability of electricity supply. The interconnection with Sweden will be launched into operation by the end of 2015.
