OREANDA-NEWS. June 24, 2010. COMSTAR – United TeleSystems (COMSTAR-UTS, LSE: CMST), the leading provider of integrated telecom services in Russia and the CIS, has been rated among major innovative companies in Russia.  Under its research called “Innovative Activities of Large-Scale Business in Russia”, Expert Agency determined a number of innovative projects of domestic large-scale businesses and presented the results at the Russian Innovations Forum. The agency has made a questionnaire survey of the major Russian companies included in the Expert 400 rating. According to Valery Fadeev, the editor in chief of Expert Magazine, this survey marked out 50 innovative projects that the organizers considered the most interesting in terms of their scope, technology solution novelty, organizational changes and efficiency.

COMSTAR-UTS took part in this survey by presenting its project related to building of wireless broadband network in Moscow using WiMAX technology. The operator started network building in 2008 and the new service was commercially launched in May 2009. At present, the operator has already installed over 200 base stations in Moscow that transmit WiMAX radio signal.

Moscow City Telephone Network (MGTS), a member of COMSTAR-UTS Group, has also been included in the list due to its innovative project related to construction of ADSL and ADSL2+ broadband network. The project was launched in 2001 and completed in 2009. As of the beginning of 2010, COMSTAR Group has 847,000 broadband subscribers. The project is distinguished by the fact that the existing signal transmission infrastructure was complemented with state-of-the-art technological add-ins in the course of its implementation that resulted in new communication opportunities for consumers.
