OREANDA-NEWS. August 25, 2010. Sibirtelecom OJSC starts offering of Internet services based on state-of-the-art GPON technology on the territory of Buryatia Republic. In Ulan-Ude the first residential estate was connected to passive optical network on Tsybikova street.

By the end of the year the Company plans to connect other 70 buildings in various districts of Ulan-Ude, particularly in Vostochny and quarter 110. Total installed capacity of Internet-ports will make 2.7 thousand.

“We put big prospects upon the new technology of high-speed Internet – GPON, – said Andrey Zdarov, Director of Buryatia branch of Sibirtelecom OJSC. – Apart from increasing of the share in the segment of Internet-services, we can optimize our expenses on maintenance of networks due to minimum amount of active equipment”.

In Buryatia the Company will spend over 40 mln rubles on the project of GRON development over this year. Total investments in passive optical networks on the territory of Siberian region will reach 3.4 bln rubles by the end of this year.

Note: GPON (Gigabit-capable рassive optical network) – the technology which allows to increase the network transmission capacity to 1 Gbit/s (100 times higher than ADSL technology), provides high quality of video transmission and offers new services such as high-definition television – HDTV, and digital telephony services. Another important feature is that GPON enables Sibirtelecom to provide its subscribers with the full set of Triple Play and new additional services, in particular video-surveillance in online-mode. Internet-access with GPON technology is organized by application of passive networks taken directly to a subscriber’s apartment without any active equipment which ensures reliability and quality of connection.
