OREANDA-NEWS. November 15, 2010. The solemn ceremony of handover to the Russian side of the jack-flag of the protected cruiser Varyag was held in the RF Embassy in the Republic of Korea in the presence of the Russian Federation President Dmitry Medvedev. After the ceremony the historic relic was delivered on board the Pacific fleet flagship – guard missile cruiser Varyag.

The jack-flag was insured by Ingosstrakh against all risks and the coverage is provided for the whole exhibition period including the transportation and exhibiting in the Naval Museum of Saint Petersburg, which means ‘nail to nail’ insurance coverage.

We remind that the legendary cruiser Varyag took the decision to battle through to Port Arthur during the Russo-Japanese war at the end of January 1904. While sailing from the port, the cruiser was attacked by the Japanese and as a result of the fierce battle she was badly damaged. The vessel captain, Vsevolod Rudnev, took the decision to scuttle the vessel. This heroic deed of the sailors amazed even the Japanese themselves: after the end of the war, the Japanese authorities established a memorial museum devoted to the Varyag heroes and captain Rudnev was awarded the Order of the Rising Sun.
