OREANDA-NEWS. November 18, 2010. A follow-up session of Ulyanovsk region Government on nuclear cluster creation has been held at the Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors.

The progress of works on construction of Dimitrovgrad Innovative Nuclear Cluster was discussed during the working conference, held in the Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors on November 15. The session was attended by Chairman of Russian Federation Audit Chamber Sergey Stepashin, Governor of Ulyanovsk region Sergey Morozov, Chairman of Board of Directors of SRIAR SSC Valery Vanyukov, SRIAR Director Alexander Bychkov and General Director of Izotope All-Regional Association Andrey Silkin.

In his speech Deputy Chairman of Ulyanivsk region Government Vladimir Kozin once again stressed that the Scientific Research Institute of Atomic Reactors was the basis of the cluster. He told the participants about the establishment of a high-tech Centre of Medical Radiology in Dimitrovgrad city. The project cost amounts to 14 billion rubles. The Centre will include a wide range of nuclear technologies: positron emission tomography, proton radiation therapy and brachytherapy. Two therapeutics departments of proton radiation and radionuclide therapy for cardiovascular and oncological diseases treatment will be at one time constructed in the area of 10 ha. The Centre is designed for 460 beds. About 40 thousand Russian citizens will be able to undergo early disease detection and get effective medical help, which shall influence the treatment quality and result in the decrease of fatal cases caused by such diseases. The Centre is designed as a complex, which includes a university town and cluster home community (campus) for specialists as well as all social infrastructures, which can meet the needs of young Russian scientists and foreign specialists.

Specialists for the future centre will be trained in 38 specialties in accordance with the agreement between Russian Federation Federal Medical and Biology Agency, Ulyanovsk State University and SRIAR. A branch of NRNU MEPhI will be opened in Dimitrovgrad city; it will train highly-qualified personnel for the nuclear power industry and primarily for SRIAR. Today a number of federal target projects are already being implemented on the basis of SRIAR SSC, including creation of a multifunctional fast research reactor (MFRR) in SRIAR, which in prospect may become the basis for the International Nuclear Centre.

When closing the meeting Sergey Stepashin expressed readiness to provide the federal level assistance in solving of the problems stated in the speech of Vladimir Kozin: provision of housing to cluster personnel, construction and repair of existing automobile roads and removal of correctional facilities from the city.
