OREANDA-NEWS. February 07, 2011. Freight traffic passing through the port of Liepaja (Latvia) in January 2011 increased by 24.1% compared to the same period last year, to 386,100 tons.
 
Monthly volume of grain declined by 26% to 97,500 tons, shipments of petroleum products rose by 1.87 times to 65,000 tons, while crude oil volume slumped 54% to 5,500 tons, handling of timber cargo fell 29% to 52,300 tons, of scrap metal increased as much as 2.2 times  to 23,300 tons, of ferrous metals - 2,4 times to 64,800 tons.

In January, 122 vessels made calls at the port, 10.9% less than a year earlier.
 
Port of Liepaja was founded in the 90s of last century at the former Soviet Union’s naval base. Today it ranks the third port in Latvia by freight traffic volumes. Half of the port’s cargo throughput is fueled by crude oil and bulk cargoes imported from the CIS countries, largely from Belorussia. Cargo throughput of the port in 2010 remained at last year's level, 4.38 million tons.
