OREANDA-NEWS. February 15, 2011. International Public Committee on IGMASS (international global natural and industrial emergency aerospace monitoring system) (IGMASS IPC) made a presentation of the project in the United Nations’ level.

The presentation by Cherkas took place on Feb. 11, during the 747th session of the Scientific and Technical Subcommittee of the U.N. Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UNCOPUOS). UNCOPUOS members who participated gained a greater understanding of the project.

According to Cherkas, the presentation was preceded by laborious organizational efforts with representatives of the countries involved in IPC.

The day before, IGMASS was presented at UN-SPIDER workshop which resulted in basic agreement on IGMASS support by UN Space Directorate (an official of the Directorate was included into IPC as an observer), as well as about incorporating the information about future IGMASS promotion in UN’s documentation.

Participants of the 747th session had an opportunity to get familiar with future IGMASS promotion steps, which include IPC workshop and meeting on May 14, during the Week of Russia in Spain. Chekas notes that the interest of Spanish-speaking nations to the project is rather high. An official representative of Argentine stated during the session that his colleagues “shall join the project, and UNCOPUOS is to evaluate IGMASS prospective in the frame of wide-range international cooperation”.

This was the third presentation of IGMASS on the UN’s level. It demonstrated growing public interest to the ideas initiated by Russian scientists aimed at reducing destructive consequences of disasters and catastrophes.
