OREANDA-NEWS. March 21, 2011. In recent years, with the deepening exploitation of marine resources, marine engineering  develops rapidly and the market demand for mooring chain in marine oil drilling platform  positioning is increasing year by year. Since 2007, in order to boost the national deep-sea oil strategy, Baosteel increases research and development efforts in steel mooring chain, reported the press-centre of Baosteel.

In 2009, led by special steel expert Professor Yin Jiang, Baosteel successfully developed  R5 mooring chain steel which had the highest strength in the world and had full independent intellectual property rights. It passed the factory certifications of ABS and CCS classification societies and was recognized as the only enterprise capable of producing such products, with bulk, stable supply.

Last year, Baosteel R5 mooring chain high strength  mooring chain steel was supplied to Yaxing Mooring Chain Corp in Jiangsu, and the production was successful. The products were used in the construction of two deep-sea drilling platforms by Russia's Vyborg Shipyard and CNOOC "Offshore Oil 981" deep-sea drilling platform. The latter is currently the world's most advanced sixth-generation deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform. The working conditions are harsh, with 3,000 meters of  maximum operating depth and up to 10000 meters of drilling depth.

At present, Baosteel already has manufacturing capacity of full range of mooring chain steel products including R4, R4S-level system, R5-level system, especially high-strength R5-level mooring chain steel , which has highly competitive technology advantage in the market.
