OREANDA-NEWS. April 1, 2011. Head of Karelia Andrei Nelidov has held a working meeting with Andrei Krainy, head of the Federal Fishery Agency, Gennady Gorbunov, Chairman of the Federation Council’s Committee for Agricultural and Food Policy and Commercial Fishing Industry, and a number of other officials who came to Petrozavodsk to participate in the exit session of the Federation Council’s Committee for Agricultural and Food Policy and Commercial Fishing Industry.

Head of Karelia has emphasized, that issues of legislative perfection in the sphere of aquaculture, marketable fish breeding, sport and amateur fishing are of great importance for the republic. Karelia has good prospects for further growth of volumes of production of fish and fish products. The recently signed cooperation agreement with the Russian Sea Group should result in creation of a large complex for industrial breeding and processing of fish.

In the opinion of the Head of Karelia, one of the main problems constraining trout-breeding in the republic is ambiguity of the corresponding legislation and regulatory environment. In particular, it would be desirable to have amendments to the legislation vesting regional authorities in power regarding organization and regulation of aquaculture development in view of local features.

Amendments providing obligatory research of environmental effects of fish farms, lease of timber land for fisheries management, etc. are also necessary.
