OREANDA-NEWS. May 03, 2011. Representatives of the Antimonopoly Committee of Ukraine have took part in the 15th International Conference on competition on the theme: “A Spotlight on Cartel Prosecution”.

Among the keynote speakers were presented heads of competition departments of 60 countries, German government agencies, senior person of the European Commission, UNCTAD, OECD, the International Network for the competition, leading lawyers and representatives of scientific and business circles.

Participants stressed the importance of enhancing international cooperation, in particular the need for further convergence of national rules of competition law in the formation of cartels.

In particular, there has been discussion of appropriate use of harsh punitive measures and other methods to effectively stop illegal activities of multinational cartels.

Besides addition, during the Conference speakers stressed the need to introduce special programs that include the provision by the competition authorities of consultations, preliminary conclusions and recommendations on certain business activities or projects. This will enable businesses to realize the unlawfulness of participation in a cartel that leads to economic risks associated with high fines.

The participation in the event is useful for the Ukrainian competition agencies because of was bringing the use of international experience concerning new mechanisms for investigation and prevention of cartel conspiracy, improvement of methods of economic analysis and appropriate institutional support.
