OREANDA-NEWS. May 10, 2011. Tata Power, in continuance of its efforts to light up the lives of the people around its areas of operation, has commenced 'Swa Upaarjan' in Naraj Marthapur, Orissa. The initiative is to impart vocational training to enhance the employability of the local people, thus enabling them to leverage the job opportunities around their own villages. Tata Power’s 'Swa Upaarjan' initiative has been instituted with the long-term objective and commitment to ensure better living conditions and a comfortable livelihood for the residents of Naraj Marthapur. 

Speaking on the occasion, Purushottam Thakur, general manager, projects, Tata Power, said, “Tata Power is committed to bringing a positive change to the lives of the residents of Naraj Marthapur. We have introduced a series of vocational training programmes, to enable the villagers to acquire requisite skills and thus explore newer avenues for income generation, all through the year. The villagers possess the potential and Tata Power is making a concerted effort to nurture it for the betterment of the people here.”

Tata Power ‘Swa Upaarjan’ initiatives:

Mushroom cultivation: Tata Power organized training camps to encourage the villagers to start mushroom cultivation, which is a low investment-high return business opportunity. The training camp witnessed participation from over 40 women residing in the Sana Munduli area. In addition to the training, Tata Power also provided the initial resources to ensure optimum crop production. Today, mushroom cultivation is being actively pursued and is an assured source of income for the villagers.

Phenyl preparation workshop: The residents from the local villages underwent a Phenyl making training programme, thus allowing them to start their own entrepreneurial ventures and make it a profitable business proposition.

Tailoring camps: Tata Power engaged women from Naraj Marthapur area to acquire training in tailoring and thereby equip them to earn a comfortable livelihood and contribute towards the family income.

Poultry culture camp: Tata Power has organized workshop on poultry culture with the help of experts, wherein participants are taught techniques to establish and maintain productive poultry farms. The workshop also educates the villagers on safe and healthy poultry practices. Post completion of the training, Tata Power also extends financial support to the villagers to establish poultry farms.

The Tata Power 'Swa Upaarjan' initiative is conceptualised to create a new wave of entrepreneurship and enthusiasm amongst the people of Naraj Marthapur. The Tata Power 'Swa Upaarjan' programme will enable and equip villagers with assured and regular income generation avenues. Tata Power will continue its community development endeavours and contribute to the wellbeing of the residents of Naraj Marthapur.
