OREANDA-NEWS. May 20, 2011. Rostelecom and IBM Eastern Europe/Asia (hereafter, IBM) have signed an agreement on using advanced IBM solutions, first of all in the area of cloud technology and in Rostelecom’s project practice, especially in rolling out further infrastructure for the electronic government.  The agreement was signed by Rostelecom President Alexander Provotorov and General Director of IBM Eastern Europe/Asia Kirill Kornilev.

Under the terms of the agreement, aside from the previously adopted software use model SaaS (Software as a Service), Rostelecom and IBM intend to offer users other models, which are also organized on the basis of IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) cloud technology and PaaS (Platform as a Service) technology which is used in developing, testing, rolling out and support Internet applications.

Rostelecom and IBM also agreed to create a working group consisting of representatives of both companies to test the applicability of these innovative technologies in Rostelecom’s programs and projects.

Cloud computing technology will make it possible to provide users with the computing resources required as an Internet service.  The main advantage of cloud technology for users is that there are no expenses for purchase, installation, renewal and support of the operability of expensive server equipment, and the software which works on it.

In accordance with the relevant Resolution of the Government of Russia, Rostelecom is the sole contractor for measures under the Federal Special-Purpose Program “Information Society (2011-2020) with respect to the formation of electronic government infrastructure, and also the formation of a Russian platform for cloud computing.

Rostelecom’s in-house infrastructure – protected telecommunications lines, data processing centers, etc. – and also experience in the implementation of large national projects will allow the Company to successfully achieve these goals both at the federal and regional level.
