OREANDA-NEWS. May 30, 2011. President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych is confident that among the strategic priorities of modernization of Kyiv is the question of building new powerful transport routes connecting the right and the left bank of the Dnipro River, he said during a presentation of the Kyiv Development Strategy until 2025.

"For now we are talking about building bridges. In the long term we need to decide whether to build tunnels under the Dnipro River, which will solve transport problems without causing environmental damage," he said.

Another important priority for the capital Viktor Yanukovych called solving environmental issues, such as building new modern waste processing plants and relocating environmentally unfriendly industrial enterprises outside the city.

It is clear, the President said, the government of Kyiv has yet to resolve a number of topical issues related to the development of transport infrastructure, security and public order, energy efficiency, upgrading of communal infrastructure, building new and modern kindergartens, schools and clinics.

"Ukraine's capital is currently behind other Eastern European capitals in terms of economic development... Leveling the initial conditions with those in our close and distant neighbors is the primary guideline for Kyiv," Viktor Yanukovych said.

According to the President, it is necessary to dedicate more attention to the issue of restructuring and reorientation of the industrial areas, development of business centers, creation of favorable conditions for national and international investors.

At the same time, he said, it is necessary to ensure the restoration and preservation of the historical part of the city attractive to tourist, take measures to maintain and expand the green areas.

"All this must be done," he said.
