OREANDA-NEWS. June 20, 2011. Rosatom and the Ministry of Energy of the USA are planning to cooperate in preparation of a legal base for joint work between nuclear research laboratories and institutions in power production at nuclear power plants, nuclear technologies development, full cycle of services at the nuclear power plants, thermonuclear fusion, radioactive wastes management, nuclear materials utilization and nuclear objects’ decommissioning, rehabilitation of environment and nuclear medicine as well. The joint declaration of collaboration in preparation of a legal base was signed by Head of Rosatom Sergey Kiriyenko and USA Minister of Energy Steven Chu within the framework of Atomexpo-2011 international forum.

Earlier, in the course of the final day of Atomexpo-2011 International Forum in Moscow, the USA Minister of Energy Steven Chu announced, that the USA were eager to proceed with active development of collaboration with Russia in the field of the nuclear power industry, and the field of nuclear materials spread in the world as well.

According to him, the two countries scientific laboratories had got a long story of collaboration in the field of nuclear safety and nuclear materials non-spread. The USA Minister of Energy also noted that he was eager to continue the cooperation with Rosatom in a number of projects, among them those on utilization of weapon plutonium, equipping vehicle checkpoints with radiation control systems and a number of other branches.

Speaking about collaboration in the field of nuclear safety, Chu announced that “our joint work allowed preventing nuclear materials from being captured by terrorists”.
