OREANDA-NEWS. June 22, 2011. On 21 June the Global Compact Board gathered at UN Headquarters in New York.. Mr. Fu Chengyu, Chairman of China Petrochemical Corporation, Sinopec in brief, as newly appointed Global Compact Board Member, attended and addressed the meeting. Speaking on behalf of business leaders, Mr. Fu called on the business community to strengthen cooperation and step up effort to combat global issues and challenges. “I shall not only commit myself to the board-level activities, but also seek support from other business leaders to UNGC initiatives and programmes, help build extensive UNGC local networks…” He also mentioned that he will head SINOPEC to advance technology innovation, reducing energy consumption and emission, and provide more alternative and clean energy, so as to help foster green economy in the region, and to achieve the goal set by Rioplus20.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and 22 board members attended the meeting.

Sinopec became a participant in UNGC in November 2004, being one of the first Chinese institutions to join UNGC. In May 2011, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Mr. Fu UNGC’s new board member. Ever since 2005, SINOPEC has established comprehensive corporate social responsibility assurance system to comply with UNGC’s ten principles in the areas of human rights, labour, the environment and anti-corruption.Sinopec annual sustainable development report has been submitted to UNGC and released to the public since 2006.
