OREANDA-NEWS. June 28, 2011. Belarus may shut its borders to import if the situation in the economy proves catastrophic, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said on Friday during a news conference for central and regional media.

“If we see a catastrophic situation, we will close the border to imports and buy only the products that we need,” Lukashenko said. He reminded that Belarus has disallowed export of some products in the western and southern directions.

“People worry that prices are high, and some people are short of imports. But they have something to buy and eat in stores now. Are they short of money? Give us a few months, and we will overcome the situation,” Lukashenko said.
