President Berzins Tours AMO Plant Factory
OREANDA-NEWS. August 23, 2011. President Andris Berzins was on a working visit to Jelgava on August 17 – the second regional visit which he has made since taking office.
At the beginning of his visit, the President visited the AMO Plant automotive company in Jelgava. The company assembles auto parts. President Berzins was given a tour of the factory and learned about plans for its further development.
The executive director of AMO Plant, Aleksejs Maslovs, told the President that although there have been changes in leadership in Moscow, the company remains ready to develop projects and work on behalf of the future of Latvia and Russia. Mr Maslovs said that the company plans to begin the manufacturing of buses in 2012, adding that financing issues in relation to this project have been resolved. The director said that the only issue that is not yet quite clear is the position of shareholders in Moscow, but he does not think that this will in any way affect the company’s operations. Mr Maslovs also said that the company plans to hire another 100 or so employees next year. He is thankful for the company’s good partnership with the Jelgava bus park, which is to be provided with new buses. There are also new Belarus tractors for which the company has found promising markets in Africa.
During the meeting, Russian Ambassador Alexander Veshnyakov said that since the company launched operations a year ago, a great deal has been done, adding that interest from the main shareholder – the Moscow local government – is very important.
Latvia’s ambassador to Russia, Edgars Skuja, has done a lot to find partners for the country in the Russian capital city, and he said that the AMO Plant buses that were produced specifically for Moscow have been successfully tested, and there is good reason to think that the partners in Russia will want to purchase them. Skuja also said that irrespective of the decision taken by the major shareholder as to the privatisation of its shares, AMO Plant is successfully finding sales markets and is undergoing development.
The Belarusian ambassador to Latvia, Alexander Gerasimenko, also praised successful co-operation in relation to Belarus tractors and said that his country continues to have an interest in joint projects with AMO Plant.
After his tour of the factory, President Berzins praised that it has done and said that this is a good foundation for further development, particularly in terms of sales markets that are of key importance to every company now that there is instability and uncertainty in the global economy. The President promised to support the development of bilateral relations so that the company can work successfully.
