OREANDA-NEWS. August 25, 2011. As part of a two day working visit, an IOC delegation has been able to see firsthand the progress being made on Sochi’s Olympic venues. On day one, the IOC team saw the advancement of the Olympic sports venues in the Coastal cluster, as well as hotels being constructed in time for the Games. The second day was devoted to sites in the Mountain cluster, where a number of sport and non-sports venues were visited.

This visit of the IOC took place in advance of the visit of the 6th IOC Coordination Commission to Sochi, scheduled for 12-14 September. On that occasion, the IOC representatives will listen to reports on other aspects around the preparation for and staging of the Games, such as human resources, security, venue and infrastructure construction, transportation, and other aspects that will contribute to hosting this unique sports event.

Jean-Claude Killy, the Chairman of the IOC’s Coordination Commission for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games, Dmitry Kozak, RF Vice-Premier, Gilbert Felli, the IOC’s Executive Director for the Olympic Games, and Dmitry Chernyshenko, the President of Sochi 2014 Organizing all took part in the visit.

IOC Coordination Commission Chairman Jean-Claude Killy said:

“We’ve had a very productive two days here in Sochi and have seen continued progress in the development of the sporting venues both in the coastal cluster and in the mountains. I am confident that the world’s winter athletes will be impressed when they arrive in Sochi for the up-coming sports events and the Games in 2014. Our visit also intended to focus on hotel construction and operational planning. Although a lot remains to be done in this area which had been identified as an area of focus by the Coordination Commission, we are confident that Sochi 2014 and its partners are on track to deliver their commitments. The entire Sochi 2014 team deserves great praise for their achievements over the past six months.”
