OREANDA-NEWS. September 2, 2011. The superbulker Sanko Odyssey with a deadweight of 74,800 tons has headed off from the Murmansk Seaport towards the Asia Pacific Region.

This is the largest ship for dry cargoes which has ever travelled via the Northern Sea Route. She carries more than 70,000 tons of iron ore concentrate produced by EuroChem’s Kovdorsky GOK (mining and processing combine).

The superbulker will be steered by Atomflot’s nuclear-propelled icebreakers.

The Sanko Odyssey is owned by the Japanese shipping company Sanko Line. This will be the first experience of using the Northern Sea Route for the Japanese.

As a reminder, a day before the suezmax tanker Vladimir Tikhonov set a new record of speed when passing via the Northern Sea Route. The travel took her just 7.4 days. An average speed of the tanker was 14 knots. She became the largest tanker in the history of navigation via this route.
