OREANDA-NEWS. September 9, 2011. OJSC Power Machines have shipped the second consignment of large-size equipment designed to overhaul Sayano-Shishenskaya HPP.

The heavy parts for the SSHPP hydroelectric units were loaded onto a river-sea class vessel on Sverdlovskaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg. Transportation of the first three sets of large-size equipment, each consisting of a hydroturbine runner (weight 145 tons, diameter 6.84 m), generator bearing oil bath (weight 21 tons, diameter 6.1 m), and 13-ton rotor frame of an auxiliary generator (frame diameter 6.09 m) is going to be carried out the only possible way, by sea and river. As soon as the consignment is fastened and all required permissions are obtained, the ship will leave Saint Petersburg. The second shipment of new equipment is going to 35 to 40 days.

The vessel loaded with the heavy-weight hydroelectric unit components crosses Lake Ladoga and Lake Onega. After that, it passes the White Sea – Baltic Sea Canal to the White Sea and then follows the Northern Sea Route to reach the mouth of the Yenisei River. Then the ship goes up the Yenisei until it arrives in Krasnoyarsk. At the Krasnoyarsk river port, the equipment is going to be transferred to a river barge which after having surmounted a boat lift at Krasnoyarskaya HPP, delivers the consignment towed by river tug to the terminal (transfer point) in the tail water pool of Mainskaya HPP (down the Yenisei, 21.5 km from SSHPP). Here, the equipment is to be transferred to a special truck which is finally going to deliver the hydroelectric units to Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP. The route’s overall length is approximately 5900 km. More information on the ship’s location and details on transportation of the new equipment can be found on the website of RusHydro JSC, Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP named after P. S. Neporozhniy at http://www.sshges.rushydro.ru/press/tracing/

An official ceremony of loading of the first consignment of the large-size equipment manufactured by Power Machines for SSHPP on board ship was held as part of the 5th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum this June. The cargo consisted of three sets of similar large-size equipment which were delivered to the site on 12 August.

Power Machines have also manufactured and shipped to SSHPP hydro turbine and hydro generator equipment as well as the fourth hydro generator. At present, the shipment of the fifth hydro generator equipment is almost complete, and the finished parts of the fourth hydro turbine and the sixth hydro generator are being shipped.

The contract to produce the main energy equipment for Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP overhaul was signed by Power Machines and RusHydro JSC in November 2009. Under the terms of the Contract, Power Machines are to manufacture 10 hydro turbines and nine hydro generators with a capacity of 640 MW each as well as six excitation systems. Furthermore, Power Machines’ engineers are going to provide installation, supervision services and commissioning of the supplied equipment. The Contract amounts to 11.7 billion roubles (excluding VAT). Power Machines are to manufacture hydroelectric equipment for five hydrounits of the renewed station this year.

The service life of the new hydroelectric units is extended to 40 years and the hydro turbine maximum efficiency is 96.6%. Its output and cavitation performance are going to be improved. The turbines will also be supplied with more efficient process protection, which will automatically shutdown a unit if unacceptable deviations in monitored parameters occur.

In 2011 RusHydro have proceeded to phase 2 of SSHPP overhaul, which includes ten new hydroelectric units to be installed in the plant generator hall. Four machines, put back into operation after corrective maintenance in 2010, are also going to be renewed. The first new hydroelectric unit (number 1) is planned to be brought into operation in accordance with the SSHPP restoration schedule in December 2011. After that, between 2012 and 2014, three hydroelectric units are to be brought into service on a yearly basis. As a result, Sayano-Shushenskaya HPP will have been completely supplied with new state-of-the-art equipment in line with all reliability and safety requirements by 2014.
