OREANDA-NEWS. September 19, 2011. On September 3, the international day of solidarity in the fight against terrorism, volunteers of the Moscow Children’s NGO "Commonwealth", together with passengers, visitors and staff of Moscow’s Domodedovo airport, commemorated the victims of the terrorist attacks that occurred on January 24 of this year. Similar events were also held on that day at 12 locations in Moscow, where explosions have taken place over the years.

At the conclusion of the event, Domodedovo Airport organized a tour for the children, during which they learned some basic facts about the comprehensive security system at the largest air harbor in the country.

They showed the kids the most modern equipment used by aviation security at the airport: gas detection systems, millimeter-wave scanning systems, stationary and portable equipment to detect explosives, etc.

The greatest interest was aroused by a new generation of scanner, SafeScout 100, first introduced into Russia’s common security system at Domodedovo. Its use significantly increased the effectiveness of screening and reduced the time of the passenger screening procedures to only 7-8 seconds, while the metal detector test takes a minimum of 20 seconds. The scanning is absolutely safe, even for people with pacemakers. Inspection by SafeScout has no medical restrictions on its use and power of the scanner’s radio signal is 10,000 times lower than the signal emitted by a mobile phone.

The work of service dogs was demonstrated by the dog trainers of Domodedovo Airport, who showed specially trained dogs and explained how they search for explosives. Since January of this year, the Domodedovo Dog Training Service has more than doubled, with the number of dogs increased to 25.

An increase in Dog Training Services is part of a program to strengthen security measures at the airport since January, 2011. As a result of this program, current year security expenditures at Domodedovo Airport will increase by 360 million rubles. To date, screening equipment with over 15 channels of mandatory input control has been installed and, by the end of September, the plan is to install another 17 channels. A training program has also been carried out and the staff of screening inspectors has been increased.

The security of Domodedovo Airport is verified on a continual basis, not only by Russian agencies and organizations, but also by the security services of other countries. Thus, in late October, 2010, a joint inspection of aviation security measures was undertaken by a team of inspectors from Rosaviation, Rostransnadzor and the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

A check on the performance of procedures to ensure security in the Russian Federation was carried out by the Commission of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport. The Commission worked together with experts of Rostransnadzor and gave a positive evaluation to aviation security at Domodedovo Airport.
