OREANDA-NEWS. September 23, 2011. Drought, displacement and conflict have left more than 13 million people in the Horn of Africa region – comprised of Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Djibouti and Uganda – in urgent need of food assistance. Bunge has donated USD 50,000 to the World Food Programme (WFP) to help fund their relief efforts.

The WFP is presently helping to distribute food to those in the region who need it. The aim is to reach more than 11 million people in five countries with food assistance. This includes 3.7 million people in Somalia, 3.7 million people in Ethiopia, 2.7 million people in Kenya as well as 109,000 people in Djibouti and 809,000 people in the Karamoja region of Uganda. You can learn more about the WFP's relief efforts and make an individual contribution on the WFP Horn of Africa Crisis web page.

Food Security – Meeting One of the Greatest Challenges of the 21st Century

Meeting the food needs of a world population that is growing in both size and prosperity will be one of the greatest challenges of the 21st Century. It will require massive increases in food production, better infrastructure and more open trade between regions. Bunge is committed to playing a role by improving the global agribusiness and food production chain and by working in collaboration with other stakeholders from business, government and civil society on broad-based solutions.

The World Economic Forum, Bunge and other leading global companies have issued "A New Vision for Agriculture" with a roadmap for addressing the challenges of global food and agricultural sustainability and clear goals: Increase agricultural production by 20 percent, decrease emissions by 20 percent and reduce rural poverty by 20 percent every decade to meet the needs of a rapidly growing world.
