OREANDA-NEWS. September 29, 2011. Achema completed cogeneration power network and celebrated the launch of 47 MW gas-fired cogeneration power plant No.2.

Cogeneration - combined heat and power production - is one of the most popular and cost-effective energy-saving technology in the world. Together with the already existing 21 MW cogeneration plant No.1, efficient cogeneration network can provide electricity and steam not only to the nitrogen fertilizer production plant, but also to other companies connected to the network.

New cogeneration plant No.2 is the only plant of such capacity in Lithuania, that fully complies with the EU CHP (cogeneration) Directive. Lithuanian heat and power producer "Panevezio energija" exploits a similar one, however Achema is the only company using effective industrial cogeneration plant for manufacturing purposes. Power efficiency of this plant is very high - over 90 percent, therefore priority environmental and energy-saving goals of Achema are maximized.

The new plant "heart" is German Siemens turbine SGT-800. In its class of 40 - 50 MW this turbine is considered the most effective among the world's industrial turbines.

Achema investments in cogeneration plant No.2 project amount to nearly 30 million EUR. About 10 percent of the sum for the implementation of the project comes from The EU Structural funds.
