OREANDA-NEWS. November 02, 2011. Director General of ROSATOM Sergey Kirienko and Minister of Science and Information & Communication Technology of Bangladesh Yeafesh Osman in Dhaka signed an intergovernmental agreement concerning construction of the first nuclear power plant in the People's Republic of Bangladesh.

The signing ceremony was held in witness of PRB Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed. The Prime Minister Hasina said, energy is a very important issue for us. We need to develop it. But it is also important for us that all safety requirements and precautions (at the NPP construction) are met, she said.

On his part, Sergey Kirienko noted that the nuclear power plant built to Russia's technologies would meet all international, so-called "post-Fukushima requirements." The nuclear power units will have a double containment of the reactor, passive heat removal system, hydrogen recombiners, core melt trap, and other systems.

The agreement provides for construction of two nuclear power units of 1000 MW installed capacity each in Ruppur site (about 200 km from Dhaka).
