OREANDA-NEWS. November 7, 2011. Moscow Domodedovo Airport is ready for the autumn-winter 2011-2012: it has more than doubled the storage facilities for de-icing fluids (DIF), expanded the capacity of diesel generator sets (DGS), and purchased additional hardware for de-icing of aircrafts.

Five machines for de-icing of aircrafts has been bought for the new season, and the total number of these pieces of equipment has reached 24 units; the storage facilities for DIF has been expanded from 320 to 880 m3, which will make it possible to create an emergency supply, sufficient for 15 days of work in normal weather conditions.

In addition, the airport has developed and is currently implementing a number of projects, which will enable it to operate normally in case of extreme weather conditions and the possible occurrence of other circumstances beyond the control of the airport services. Despite the full compliance of the existing equipment with regulatory requirements, the airport has decided to double the capacity of autonomous sources: the capacity of the diesel generator has so far been brought to 8.920 MW. By February 1, 2012, it will be increased up to 15,600 kW. This means that the airport will be able to independently maintain uninterrupted operation, even in the case of simultaneous failure of the two independent power sources, which are providing Domodedovo Airport with energy, and which are under the economic management of Moscow United Electric Grid Company OJSC.

The project of construction of the airport’s own combined heat and power mini-plant with total capacity of 24,000 kW will make it possible for Domodedovo Airport to become even more energy sustainable. The first line of the mini-plant with the capacity of 12 MW is to be commissioned in 2013. Construction works for the second line with the same capacity, 12 MW, are planned for the middle of 2016.
