OREANDA-NEWS. November 09, 2011. Cargo volume handled at the port of Arkhangelsk in January-October 2011 decreased by 1.2% compared with the same period of last year, to 3.89 million tons, the Arkhangelsk Port Authority statistics said.

Petroleum products exports through the port’s terminal increased by 27.4% year-over-year to 1.15 million tons, while shipment of coal fell 3.9% to 228,100 tons, with timber cargo exports down by 5.2% to 407,900 tons. Short sea traffic volume dropped 15.1%, to 1.46 million tons.

In October, cargo traffic at the port increased by 29.8% from last year’s figure, to 433,100 tons. Monthly oil product exports soared 45.6% to 134,600 tons, coal throughput climbed 1.1% to 27,300 tons. Transshipment of timber cargo in October slumped 29.5%, to 25, 600 tons. Coastal cargo volume jumped by 55.6% to 190,300 tons.

The year-round navigable Port of Arkhangelsk is located in the delta of the Northern Dvina River flowing into the White Sea. Cargoes transported via the Northern Sea Route are passing through the port’s terminals. The port’s stevedoring companies handle a broad range cargo: general, cellulose, cardboard, containers, timber, metals, fertilizers and heavy-lift cargo, suction and grab cargoes. Port of Arkhangelsk is capable of handling up to 4.5 million tons a year. In 2010, cargo throughput of the port increased year-over-year by 30.1% to 4.5 million tons.
