OREANDA-NEWS. December 7, 2011. The Brazilian crude steel production reached 2.9 million tonnes in October 2011, 2.7% down from last year’s same period. As far as rolled steel products are concerned, the output totaled 2.1 million tonnes in October this year, 1.9% lower than in October 2010. The overall production in the year to October amounted to 29.7 million tonnes of crude steel and 21.4 million tonnes of rolled products, i.e. 6.7% and 1.5% less than in the equivalent 2010 period, respectively.

Domestic shipments totaled 1.8 million tonnes of steel products in October 2011, up 13.2% from October 2010 figures. The total sales achieved 18.1 million tonnes in the first ten months this year, a 2.1% growth from last year’s similar period.

In October 2011, the steel exports totaled 744,000 tonnes, generating a revenue of 642 million dollars. These figures take the overall exports to 9.1 million tonnes and 7.1 billion U.S. dollars this year to October, which represent an increase of 31.8% in tonnage and 61.2% in value when compared to the previous year’s same period.

The imports, for their turn, totaled 243,000 tonnes (USD  333 million) in October and 3.1 million tonnes in the year to October, down 38.3% from the same period of 2011.

Decreasing apparent steel consumption

The Brazilian apparent steel consumption reached 2.1 million tonnes in October 2011 and 21.1 million tonnes over the whole year to October. Such figures represent a drop of 3.5% and 5.5%, respectively, when compared the previous year’s same periods.
