OREANDA-NEWS. January 18, 2012. Employers are to pay for three days of an employee’s sick leave instead of one, as it was before. This is provided by the amendments into the law regulating payments of sick leaves and other social insurance allowances, passed by the parliament in the ultimate second reading.

According to Sergiu Sainciuc, deputy minister of labor, social protection and family, now an employer is paying for the second calendar day of the sick leave of an employee. According to the amendments passed, an employer is also to pay for the third and fourth days of a sick leave issued to an employee on the basis of his or her sickness or an accident not connected with his or her work. From the fifth calendar day of the sickness to the last one the compensations is to be paid form the social insurance funds.

The amendments were adopted due to unfavorable work conditions and irresponsibility of employers who reduce expenses for sick leave payments. The changes are designed to heighten the liability of employers, to improve working environment and to reduce the budget’s expenditures. Passing the amendments is predicted to save up to 7 mln. leis for the budget of the social insurance annually.
