OREANDA-NEWS. February 6, 2012. International Conference devoted to the10th anniversary of the International Consortium on Landslides (ICL) was held in Kyoto, Japan on January 16-20, 2012. JSC "Institute Hydroproject" - member of the Consortium since 2003, was represented by Dr. Alexander Strom - head of seismic hazard assessment department of the Geodynamic Research Center (branch of the JRC "Institute Hydroproject").

The jubilee conference was attended by representatives of UNESCO, the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Federation of Engineering Organizations and the number of Japanese governmental organizations.

Dr. Alexander Strom and Dr. Oleg Zerkal from Moscow State University presented a report on the necessity to unify landslide terminology and classification system used in Russian and English languages in view of the proposed application of foreign and international standards in Russia. The report attracted the attention of the conference delegates, since many countries face similar problem.

During the meeting of the ICL Steering Committee the Geodynamic Research Center together with the Shimane University (Japan) proposed organization of the special session "Natural dams and landslides in reservoirs" within the frames of the III World Landslide Forum, which will be held in 2014 in Beijing (China). Various issues related to slope's stability at the dam sites and reservoir banks should be discussed at this session. Participation of experts in landslide study and monitoring as well as of geotechnical engineers and operating personnel of the hydraulic power plants responsible for their safety is expected.
