OREANDA-NEWS. March 06, 2012. Cargo traffic at the port of Arkhangelsk in January-February 2012 grew by 6.6% compared to the same period of 2011, to 497,100 tons, the Arkhangelsk Port Authority statistics said.

The two-month robust performance of Arkhangelsk port was fueled by a 57.6-percent surge in oil products exports (187,500 tons).

In the reporting period, shipments of timber cargo fell 18.3% to 54,900 tons, coal exports tumbled by 55.4% from a year earlier to 26,300 tons.

The year-round navigable Port of Arkhangelsk is located in the delta of the Northern Dvina River flowing into the White Sea. Cargoes transported via the Northern Sea Route are passing through the port’s terminals. The port’s stevedoring companies handle a broad range cargo: general, cellulose, cardboard, containers, timber, metals, fertilizers and heavy-lift cargo, suction and grab cargoes. Port of Arkhangelsk capacity allows handling up to 4.5 million tons a year. In 2011, cargo throughput at the port was slightly down to 4.4 million tons.
