OREANDA-NEWS. March 15, 2012. For the first time in Russia, specialists from M2M telematics Group in collaboration with the Moscow State Automobile & Road Technical University scientific employees have developed the concept of a federal identification and monitoring system for transport objects. The Department of Automotive Production and Agricultural Vehicle Production of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation was the customer of this work.

The uniqueness of this project lies in its combination of satellite navigation technology and radiofrequency identification for the solution of such tasks as transport means monitoring, documentation of remote control, transport infrastructure objects identification as well as provision of additional information services for drivers and others. The experience gained during the development of the system could be used in the future to create and develop Smart Transport Systems for Russian cities, including “ERA-GLONASS” project, 12 tone lorries and others.

The system is based on the complex use of radio frequency identification technologies (RFID markers, RFID readers) and satellite navigation. RFID technologies are, thus far, not widely applied in the Russian transport sector, while systems working on these principles are actively being created and used in Brazil, Mexico, India, USA and China.

According to the forecasts of analysts, a wide spread deployment of an identification and monitoring system of transport objects will allow for the reduction of the road traffic accidents number approximately by 5-10% and will lead to a reduction in economic damage of no less than 2%.

"The use of High Technologies in the transport sector of the Russian Federation will allow for the attainment of a significant boost in economic terms. We are already currently 3rd in terms of GDP growth after China and India. Recently, a complex, consistent creation of modern navigation and information systems has been occurring in Russian cities, and this is delivering its own results. The transport infrastructure is being improved and the approach to the transport situation management is changing. I believe that the development of a Federal Monitoring and Identification System will become yet another important step, first and foremost, in the increase in convenience and the provision of transport safety for every resident of Russia", commented the Director of the Department of Automotive Production and Agricultural Vehicle Production of the Industry and Trade Ministry of Russia, Alexei L'vovich Rakhmanov.
