OREANDA-NEWS. April 02, 2012. The FSUE NO RAO (Moscow) has become the National Operator for management of radioactive waste, a directive published on the Russian Government’s website on March 20 says.

“The establishment of the National Operator is one of key solutions to the radwaste problem. The National Operator will help to move to the sound, civilized and modern practices of radwaste disposal, to absolutely safe disposal of radwaste,” Igor Linge, Deputy Director for information and analytical support of integrated nuclear and radiation safety problems at the Nuclear Safety Institute of RAS (IBRAE) said.

On his part, First Deputy Director of IBRAE Rafael Arutyunyan reminded that the National Operator had been appointed in accordance with the “Federal Law on the Radioactive Waste management” signed by the country leadership in summer 2011.

The draft law which provides for amendments to individual legal instruments of the Russian Federation was adopted by the State Duma on June 29 and approved by the Council of Federation on July 6, 2011.
