OREANDA-NEWS. April 06, 2012. The Moscow Mint of Goznak has mastered a new technology – mosaic cover on medals. Now it is possible to decorate both medals and coins with mosaic. But such products can be produced in limited editions only, because each mosaic is hand-made.

Medals with mosaic cover were first presented at the beginning of 2012 at a Moscow exhibition in the “Khodynka” State exhibition hall.

The medals are produced at the Moscow Mint of Goznak in co-operation with Andrey Madjos, an enamel and mosaic artist and dedicated to the 300th anniversary of Mikhail Lomonosov – the founder of mosaic art in Russia. Lomonosov is depicted on the medal making a mosaic composition and holding a real mosaic piece.

The innovation of the technology applied by Andrey Madjos is in using hot jeweler's enamels but in the mosaic shape for the first time. This new work technique with the classical material has no analogue in the history of the world culture or coin and medal business. Every medal issued is unique because the mosaic is hand-made. A detailed description of the new technology is published in the new issue of The Gold Chervonets (No. 1, 2012).
