OREANDA-NEWS. April 09, 2012. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said that a blanket treaty on the creation of the Eurasian economic union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan may be signed by January 1, 2015.

“We have agreed that the discussion of these issues will be carried out by the leaders of the states, probably, in May, when a summit of the Eurasian Economic Community is scheduled to take place,” Medvedev said after a meeting of the inter-state council of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC).

Medvedev added that the number of issues left to consider is not large. “We have two years ahead of us, during which we need to complete all the processes,” Medvedev also said.

In 2011, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin proposed the creation of a Eurasian economic union based on the customs union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan, with Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan likely to join in the near future.

The creation of a Eurasian economic union between the former states of the Soviet Union could be implemented after 2015, Putin said then.

Medvedev also said that the counties-observers of the EurAsEC would receive certain privileges should they join the Customs Union of Russia, Belarus, and Kazakhstan.

“If you participate in any international entity, you receive a set of benefits. If you do not participate in this legal entity, consequently, you may face difficulties,” Medvedev also said.

At present, the EurAsEC comprises Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, and Tajikistan.
