OREANDA-NEWS. April 18, 2012. For easing of the ornithology situation at Pulkovo Airport set of measures on optimization of the Aviation Ornithology Group activity was assumed. Project consists of elimination of factors contributing birds’ rookery within the Airport area, application of additional means of bird scaring and as well re-equipment of the Ornithology.

Planned works on deforestation and amelioration of boggy areas were carried out for elimination of the rookery within the Airport area. Drainage works let to prevent soil overwatering and as well to enhance strength, resistance and operating life of the airfield pavement. Two surface water bodies were covered over with a net in order to prevent birds’ contact with water, in addition wire net fencing with pennant creating scare sound were installed.

Runway N1 equipping with the new up-to-date bioacoustic system, as well upgrading of the current bioacoustic system located on runway N2, and installation of CCTV cameras enabling surveillance and bioacoustic equipment running was done within the main phase of optimization of ornithology flight support.

For flight operational air safety ornithologists take additional actions while birds control. Currently four gas guns are set in operation, ten mirror balls are installed. Thereto it is planned to purchase bird scaring portable laser in June 2012.  Airport experts extensively use saker falcons and peregrines as natural influencing factors. During project implementation ornithologists undergo advanced training.
