OREANDA-NEWS. April 20, 2012. Thanks to international support, Ukraine will fulfill its commitments and in 2015 completes construction of a new facility "Shelter" (confinement) over emergency the fourth power unit of the Chernobyl NPP as well as storage for spent nuclear fuel.

This said, being in Japan on an official visit, the Minister for Emergencies Viktor Baloga at the 45-th annual conference of the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum (JAIF) in Tokyo.

The Head of MOE has expressed his gratitude the international community for scientific, technical, financial and humanitarian assistance in eliminating the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.

Viktor Baloga has also noted that in terms of volumes of electricity, the Ukrainian NPPs is the eighth highest in the world, and the Development Strategy of national FEC until 2030 provides that half of Ukraine's electricity would be produced by nuclear power plants.

At this stage Ukraine cannot abandon of nuclear energy, said the official, but the lessons of Chernobyl and the Japanese "Fukushima-1" impose a high responsibility towards very responsible attitude to such technologies. As stated at the recent Summit on Nuclear Safety the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, the construction of a new confinement at the Chornobyl NPP starts on April 26 this year

The amount of the involved international donors’ funds to transform NPP into an environmentally safe site, according to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, makes near 750 million Euros.
