OREANDA-NEWS. April 24, 2012. Tata Power, India largest integrated power utility, organised a scholarship distribution ceremony for the meritorious students of Dherand and Shahapur villages under the ’Scholarship Scheme’ instituted as part of its community development initiative.

Applications were received from the students of Dherand and Shahapur villages for their performance during academic year 2010-11. Out of the total applications received, 30 students (10 each from Classes 8, 9 and 10) were selected on the basis of merit. The main objective of this scheme is to motivate students, acknowledge their efforts to create healthy competition among students, and to encourage excellence in the field of education. Bank accounts of the qualifying students were opened in a nationalised bank, emphasising on the right of children to education and their participation in decision-making.

This event was witnessed by more than 200 villagers. Principals of four schools and other dignitaries from the villages also graced the occasion. The programme started with an inaugural song by the self-help group members, followed by distribution of scholarships to the selected students by the company. The company also shared the list of educational material that will be provided by the company for strengthening the schools’ infrastructure.
