OREANDA-NEWS. May 28, 2012. The Government of the Kaliningrad region expects to increase the flow of tourists to the region up to 7 million people a year by 2020, said the head of the regional tourism agency Elena Kropinova.

"The implementation of new travel destinations and the creation of new tourist routes, including water sports,  should allow us to reach the  figure of 7 million tourists, which will raise the tourism share in the region from the current 2% to 10.94% in 2020," - said she.

She also mentioned that the tourism development will be supported by the Russian Federal Tourism Agency program which is aimed at promoting Russia on the world tourist market, the introduction of new border regulations with Poland and the hosting of regional stage of World Cup 2018 Football Championship.

She said that at present,  Kaliningrad region is visited by 500 thousand tourists each year.

A significant increase in tourist traffic is planned by the approved strategy of the regional socio-economic development. It involves the creation of world-class infrastructure , the construction of the amusement  park, aquarium, youth development project "Baltic Artek", as well as the development of congress tourism.
