In the course of his performance the Minister discussed with the participants actual issues in the sphere of education and shared his own views concerning their solution.

The event continued the series of conferences on engineering education problems. That time the core topic of discussion was engineering management. It is remarkable that among the conference participants there were not only Russian education representatives and deans of higher educational institutions, but business representatives as well, in particular, heads of large corporations such as UAC, USC, Rosatom, Vertolety Rossii (Russian Helicopters).

During the conference and following debates the participants tried to find answers to several questions: what specialists will large companies need in the course of 5-10 years, and how is the educational system to be changed in order to get the right amount of people of definite professions? The participants agreed that the arsenal of competences development method higher educational institution have today is not adequate to the goals of innovative advance.  To their mind corporations should together create innovative competence centres aimed at new practices provision. Participation of higher educational institutions in that centres will give an opportunity to identify forming and perspective needs in highly qualified personnel and demands for competences.

Dmitry Livanov supported the major conclusions of the participants. At that he mentioned that it was impossible to cover the whole range of problems that exist in the educational sphere at the same time. “We establish priorities, the rest we will shift for 3-5 years without removing it from agenda”, said the Minister.  Among the most significant goals the Minister named the necessity to create several universities of the international level.  “Rapid, but still decisive launch of several international class universities in needed. In the sphere of higher education it is quiet a good priority, just in order to determine a high standard that the Russian education market of today just does not have”, said Mr. Livanov.

Andrei Volkov, Dean of the Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO, confirmed that the Russian education system is in need of some changes. “There is progressive development; we have reached common grounds concerning the issue. Now we have to modify what we already have, and that will let us stay in the top-five countries in that sphere”, stressed Andrei Volkov.
