OREANDA-NEWS. July 19, 2012. Academician M.F. Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems is to build eight Gonets-M satellites. These spacecraft are intended to replenish the multifunctional personal communications system Gonets-D1M, which is deployed under the Federal space program for years 2006-2015.

Today one Gonets-M satellite already carries out its mission in orbit. Five more spacecraft, built by ISS-Reshetnev within the framework of research and development projects, will be launched soon. Gonets-M #14, Gonets-M #16 and Gonets-M #17 are stored at the company’s site and their launch date depends on a launch vehicle readiness. As for Gonets-M #13 and Gonets-M #15, these spacecraft have been delivered to the Plesetsk Cosmodrome and currently undergo pre-launch preparations.

The next eight satellites are due to be constructed by ISS-Reshetnev by the end of 2015. Serial production of these spacecraft is based on the standardized design which has been verified during previous research and development projects.

The Gonets-D1M constellation in its full operational capability should comprise 12 satellites at altitudes of 1500 km high. Low-orbit communications systems offer many advantages, for instance, they provide global coverage area, allow the use of small and low-cost terminals and omni-directional antennas and also these constellations provide communications services in any places, including mountainous and cross-country regions.

The system is intended to provide e-mail services as well as user terminal GLONASS positioning data. Communications of this type are advantageous for many sectors of the national economy. Quick data transmission is highly important while tracking hazardous cargo, oil and gas transportation. Besides, the constellation will facilitate scientific and environmental monitoring as well as offer telephone and fax services in the coverage territory of these low-orbit satellites.
