OREANDA-NEWS. August 6, 2012. ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries application provides fast on-device translation of words and phrases helping people communicate more efficiently with their foreign friends and colleagues, and better understand the meaning of foreign words when travelling abroad, reading books or surfing the internet. The application provides access to more than 250 dictionaries spanning 30 most popular languages* yet ensures outstanding quality of the content accessible via Lingvo. Version 2.5 provides developers with open API to easily enhance their applications with dictionary functions. It features deeper integration with the Android environment and improves user experience when they work with Android devices.

ABBYY Lingvo Dictionaries can now be integrated with other applications for Android to enhance them with convenient and powerful word translation function. For example integrated into a reading application, Lingvo Dictionaries will allow users to read books and documents in foreign languages much easier — by supporting the ability to translate words directly from the text, without leaving the application. To support this functionality, ABBYY Lingvo with its vast dictionary databases has to be installed on the same device.

Upon selecting an unknown word in the text, a small dictionary “card” will pop up containing key information on the required word including translations or explanations of its meaning. Without leaving the application, a user can also listen to an audio pronunciation of the word if it is available. To get more information about the required word, a user can just tap this small dictionary card and open a full article that may contain additional translation alternatives, phonetic spellings, word-use examples, and inflected forms of words. “We open Lingvo API and invite all developers building Android apps to collaboration”, said Olga Tolstunova, sales and marketing director of Mobile Products Department at ABBYY. “We will be happy to help promote the most promising and interesting integration projects through our own channels including corporate websites, ABBYY products at the Google Play store, joint announcements and more.”
