OREANDA-NEWS. August 8, 2012. Mathematicians of PrivatBank published a web page www.pb.ua/names, where the unique data of the popularity of Ukrainian masculine and feminine names are presented. Anyone interested may learn how popular some or other name has been since 1930. The popularity of a name means the percentage of people born in a specific year, who were given this name.

On the statistics page, one may find out the rating of the TOP-50 masculine and feminine names for each year, as well as build popularity diagrams for an individual name in time (from 1930 through 1996) and for individual oblasts of the country.

“You may play with these diagrams for hours and hours! For example, look at the popularity diagram of the name Yuri. In 1961, the popularity of this name jumped from 3% to 7% at once! It is obvious that it is explained by the Gagarin’s space flight” Dmytro Dubilet, Marketing Director of PrivatBank says, “The name Taras is another example. We can see that in the late 1980s the popularity of this name grew practically twice! And in general its popularity in Lviv is 7 times higher than in Kyiv and 20 times higher than in Dnipropetrovsk.”

According to the rating published by PrivatBank, currently Alexander, Vladimir and Nikolay are the most popular names in Ukraine for men and Tatiana, Elena and Maria are such for women. It is of interest that in 1930 these were Nikolay, Vasiliy, Vladimir and Anna, Nina, Ekaterina respectively.

These statistical data were collected based on the anonymized data of clients of PrivatBank. PrivatBank considers that these data may be treated as absolutely representative for the entire country, as PrivatBank’s clients currently number more than 16 million people. The bankers also underline that all the studies were conducted in full compliance with the accepted standards for handling confidential data.
