Oil Industry Safety Awards were instituted in 1987 by Oil Industry Safety Directorate (OISD) in order to inculcate competitiveness amongst oil companies to improve their safety performance. OISD evaluates the Safety performance of Oil & Gas industry members every year and the top performers are recognized through awards given away by the Hon'ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Safety performance of the competing organizations / installations is evaluated with the help of a criteria which takes into consideration, the total loss concept i.e. fatalities, fires, lost time, direct & indirect losses etc. and also the hazard potentials.

The OISD Safety Awards ceremony to honor the winners for the years 2009 and 2010 was held at a glittering ceremony held at New Delhi on August 1, 2012. ONGC, the flagship energy major walked away with a plethora of awards bagging five in different categories and one individual award. The ceremony was graced by the presence of Hon’ble Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Mr. Jaipal Reddy, Hon’ble Minister of State, Mr. R.P.N Singh, Mr. G.C. Chaturvedi Secretary, MoPNG, Mr. L.N. Gupta Joint Secretary, Refineries, Mr. Hirak Dutta, Executive Director, OISD and Mr. S.L.Chakravorty Director, Process & Engg, OISD along with several other dignitaries.

Mr. Sudhir Vasudeva CMD, ONGC received the awards on behalf of all ONGCians from the Hon’ble Ministers Mr. Jaipal Reddy and Mr. R.P.N Singh under the categories:

•           Cauvery Asset as the Best Performer in Onshore Oil & Gas Asset category amongst All India E&P Operators for 2010-11

•           SH Platform as the Best Performer in Offshore Production Platform - PSUs category for 2009-10

•           Sagar Shakti as the Best Performer in Offshore Drilling Rig - PSUs category for 2009-10

•           Rajamundry Asset as the most Consistent Safety Performer amongst Onshore Oil & Gas Asset for 2009-10

•           MRPL as the Most Consistent Performer amongst Refineries for 2009-10
