OREANDA-NEWS. August 28, 2012. According to University of Science and Technology of China, 10 first-authored papers from the National Key Laboratory of Fire Sciences of the institute were published during the 34th International Conference on Combustion, ranking top in number among international fire research institutes. Prof. Qi Fei from the university also became the first researcher from China invited to address the conference since the conference initiated in 1928.

International Conference on Combustion has been the most influential and prestigious academic conference on combustion in the world. Plateau fires, fire whirls and multi-flame combustion have been highlighted in fire research globally. The National Key Laboratory of Fire Sciences of USTC built the largest-scaled fire whirl simulating experiment system in the world in 2006 , and established the world's first plateau fire safety research experimental base in Tibet in 2009. During the conference, Prof. Qi Fei and other researchers from Plateau Fire Research Team published 7 papers, and the research team directed by Prof. Liu Naian published 3 papers on fire whirls and multi-flame combustion. These achievements show the advancement USTC has made in the fields of plateau fire safety,  fire safety in the boundary areas between forests and urban areas and others, symbolizing the leading position of the laboratory in the research fields in the world. Up till now, USTC owns 13 first-authored research papers published in the conference, topping all the other research institutes in mainland China.
