OREANDA-NEWS. August 31, 2012.  Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kuniharu Nakamura) has signed an agreement with DERZHEKOINVEST (Head Office: Kiev; President: Koblya Mykhailo), which is under the State Environmental Investment Agency of Ukraine (Head Office: Kiev; Head: Vladyslav Iakubovski; hereinafter, "SEIA") to deliver about 1200 units of police-specification Prius on August 29, for Ukraine's police vehicle renewal project. For this roughly USD 34 million  agreement, Sumitomo Corporation will start the delivery around February 2013.

According to a Green Investment Scheme1 agreement concluded between the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture; Chairman: Kazuo Furukawa; hereinafter, "NEDO") and SEIA2, the police vehicle renewal project will be carried out as a GIS project. Replacing existing vehicles with Toyota Motor Corporation's Prius which uses latest technologies will allow for a dramatic improvement in fuel efficiency and about a 70% reduction in CO2 emissions.

Partly due to the fact that the country does not have an eco-car subsidy system, hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles are not widely used in Ukraine. Sumitomo Corporation recognizes the significance of the project as it believes that the delivery of 1200 hybrid vehicles to the public office will not only help address global warming but also contribute to reducing the country's environmental impact and raising awareness of the environment.

With 45 million people, Ukraine has the biggest population in Eastern Europe, excluding Russia. The country sits in a geopolitically important area in Europe and the Eurasian region, and is expected to achieve rapid economic development in the future. Sumitomo Corporation established an office in Kiev in 1993, and has since been involved in automobile, construction equipment, agricultural chemicals, power generation facilities and other businesses. As for automobiles, the Kiev Branch is engaged in passenger vehicle sales through an importer and seller of Toyota/Lexus vehicles, Toyota Ukraine, and a dealership Summit Motors Ukraine. The car business has the greatest share of the Japanese brand car market in the country. Sumitomo Corporation will continue to contribute to the development of the country through these businesses.
