OREANDA-NEWS. September 07, 2012.  On the 6-th of September, 2012, the IV International Forum and Dialogue Session “Atomic Energy, Society, Safety – 2012” ended in St. Petersburg.

The second day of the Forum and Dialogue Session continued discussing the topic of the safe development of nuclear power in Russia and in the world. In particular, the speakers drew attention of the audience to the fact that the basic trends of the world nuclear power development remained even after the accident at Fukushima-Daiichi NPP. Countries, which are leaders in this field, have stated their adherence to the initially set plans.

Of papers made by foreign speakers, one of most interesting was the paper by Ms. Ou Bao, an associate professor of the Institute of Science, Technology and Society of the Qinghua University (PRC), who elaborated on the safety culture adopted at Chinese NPPs. She noted that in spite of a high pace of nuclear power plants construction in China, the topic of safety (owing to Chinese traditional approaches which prescribe to speak of advantages and withhold disadvantages) has not received proper attention and the safety culture is developing slowly.

In addition to the fact that the Forum and Dialogue is an international-scale event, it serves a platform, which allows building an effective dialogue between regions and ROSATOM and discussing topical issues. Given the event venue set in St. Petersburg, Sosnovy Bor non-governmental organizations became active participants of the discussion, since they are trying to draw closer attention of ROSATOM to environmental issues, such as the development of RWDF (radioactive waste disposal facility) in Sosnovy Bor.

The fact that the dialogue of environmentalists and nuclear experts produces real results is evidence of effectiveness of such forum. For instance, the last year forum’s paper made by Lina Zernova, Chairwoman of the NGO Movement “The Home Bank” was responded by ROSATOM Head Sergey Kirienko, which, in turn, led to setting up a task force of the Supervisory Board members and NGO representatives. In her paper at this forum L. Zernova stressed that the task force activity had led to a number measures aimed at improving the environmental situation in Sosnovy Bor.

Thus, it can be admitted that the today’s forum has become another stage in the development of the dialogue between the nuclear community representatives and ecological organizations. This is manifested in gradual closing in the parties’ positions.
