OREANDA-NEWS. September 17, 2012. Moscow Domodedovo Airport has joined e-Freight, a pilot project for implementation of the international standards for electronic processing and tracking of air cargo, which was launched in Russia this year. In late August, the new technology aimed to improve the accuracy and reliability of the logistics system, was tested on a flight of AirBridgeCargo when processing transit cargo from Beijing to Frankfurt at Domodedovo airport.

The technology, developed and recommended by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), will make it possible for Domodedovo, serving 35% of cargo of the Moscow Aviation Hub, to create a competitive advantage for attracting global transit cargo flows. E-Freight has been actively implemented by more than 30 major international airlines, including the partners of Domodedovo, such as Emirates and British Airways, as well as global freight hubs, including Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris.

Domodedovo was one of the first Russian airports to begin the integration into the global electronic system, which implementation of is impossible without involvement of the government, as governmental controlling bodies constitute the part of the logistics chain. If the pilot project is successful, then the parties thereto will receive a significant competitive advantage: efficient service, the greater reliability and accuracy, as well as a significant reduction of costs for clearing and registration of cargo.

The introduction of e-Freight will be another important step in the implementation of the transfer potential of Domodedovo Airport. Having the most extensive route network, the airport offers a variety of connecting destinations, convenient for the transportation of transit cargo.

The airport has its own warehouse complex, cargo capacity of which make it possible to handle up to 600 tons of cargo per day. Developing its service infrastructure, Domodedovo is building the fourth stage of the cargo terminal, which is scheduled to be commissioned in the end of 2013. Developing the Cargo Village, a project of a large scale cargo complex goes very actively.

The apparent advantage of the airport is its proximity to the four logistics centers and industrial parks, including North Domodedovo PLC, the largest A class complex in Moscow and Europe. An integral part of the development of cargo traffic is Aerotropolis, a project of an aviation conglomerate of the future, which is to contribute to the further growth and development of the cargo branch.

The implementation of e-Freight will allow Moscow Domodedovo Airport offer airlines the global service standard for cargo flights, which will become common for 186 airports in the world by 2015, according to IATA's forecast.

Moscow Domodedovo Airport is the largest airport in passenger traffic in Russia. In 2011, the airport served 25,701,610 people, which enabled it to become one of the largest airports in Europe according to the ACI classification. Moscow Domodedovo Airport has been chosen for flights to Moscow by members of the world's leading aviation alliances - Star Alliance, oneworld. Since 2009, Moscow Domodedovo Airport tops the list of the best airports in the Eastern Europe by quality of service, according to an annual survey by the independent research company Skytrax Research (UK).
