OREANDA-NEWS. September 26, 2012. The request was set forth in a letter Premier of Moldova Vladimir Filat sent to President of the European Bank for reconstruction and Development Suma Chakrabarti. The Premier highly appreciated activity of EBRD in Moldova, including that on implementing road rehabilitation projects, and called this assistance of high importance for the economic development of the republic.

Vladimir Filat noted that the government of Moldova is interested in sighing a new financial agreement with EBRD at a sum of EUR 150 mln. to have rehabilitated 231 km of national highways till 2015. According to him, the project is going to be co-financed by the European Investment Bank. The Premiers emphasized importance of Moldova’s cooperation with EBRD in priority areas and mentioned the government’s interest in implementing new projects in partnership with EBRD. Moldova addressed EIB with a request for a new loan of EUR 150 mln. for road rehabilitation on September 21, 2012.

The appeal to leaders of the European Investment Bank was signed by Premier of Moldova Vladimir Filat and handed out to EIB Vice-president Wilhelm Molterer at their meeting in Chisinau. According to Vladimir Filat, implementing the Road Infrastructure Development Strategy and the Road Rehabilitation Program is still in need of investing; that is why authorities of Moldova have addressed to EIB and EBRD with the new appeal for an extra backing at a total sum of 300 mln. euros. The funds borrowed by EIB will enable the government of Moldova to have rehabilitated 170 km of national roads more, Vladimir Filat has stated.

The Premier said he expects the favourable answer from leaders of EIB and EBRD. Earlier the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development extended Moldova loans at a total sum of EUR 150 mln. to back the road rehabilitation program, valued at EUR 181.2 mln.
