OREANDA-NEWS. October 26, 2012. Offer of the Czech-Russian Consortium MIR.1200 (SKODA JS, JSC Atomstroyexport, and JSC OKB Gidropress), which envisages 70% localization will revive the economy of the Czech Republic. This conclusion is stipulated in an analysis carried out by a renowned consulting agency A.T. Kerney. Focus of the study was the economic influence of the Temelin NPP completion.

According to the research, with the cost around 8 billion Euro and with the multiplication effects in mind the realization of the MIR.1200 Consortium’s offer would mean stimulatory injection for the Czech economy worth 23.98 billion Euro.

The study was presented during this year’s forum Atomex Europe by Anton Poriadine, partner and Vice-President of A.T. Kearney. According to Poriadne, the offer of MIR.1200 Consortium could provide long-term positive economic and social effects for the whole Czech economy across all regions. Apart from benefits related to the completion itself the offer brings important economic benefits for many follow-up industrial areas, such as construction materials, transportation, education, water management or banking.

The main economic benefits for the country are primarily incomes, which go to local suppliers and all their sub-suppliers participating at the construction and operation of the power plant. Apart from that the completion will bring energy stability and subsequent improvement of infrastructure. Other important economic benefits are also incomes to the state budget from taxes gained through selling the electricity that the power plant creates for sixty years. State budget will also be enriched by taxes paid by Czech companies participating at construction and operation of the plant. According to independent estimations made by A.T. Kearney the realization of the Consortium’s project will bring 2.2 billion Euro to the state’s budget.

Among the important social advantages are leverage of the unemployment rate and growth of the workers’ qualification– for the construction and operation of the NPP highly skilled employees are needed. According to A.T. Kearney the realization of the project would bring creation of 49 thousand workplaces, including subsequent fields. Construction of NPP furthermore increases the interest of young people in studying technical fields, because technical jobs are connected to higher salaries. Higher interest in technical education will have positive effects also on other industrial spheres.

In his presentation Poriadine stressed that all positive effects are of a long-term nature, which is proven by the analysis implemented for the Scottish nuclear power plant Torness. Though its construction took place already in the 1980s, the unemployment in the region is still below the national average, there is more highly-skilled employees in the area than in other parts of Scotland and the national budget is yearly enriched by more than 12 million Euro only from local taxes.

It is important that localization in the Czech Republic, country with long tradition and highly developed energy industry, will positively influence a wide range of industry and scientific spheres, from research and development towards supplies, realization of the project or marketing to the servicing of the power plant. .As stated in the study, Consortium can assure 70% participation of local companies, which cannot be realized in other countries in the region.
