OREANDA-NEWS. November 15, 2012. BP is to invest up to USD 7 million to establish a research group at the University of Surrey to study fundamental science and recovery processes related to heavy and viscous oils. These oils form a significant proportion of the world’s remaining oil resources and research is required to improve efficiency and reduce the footprint of development.

The group will consist of 2 academic posts, 2 technical posts, 2 post-doctoral researchers and 4 post-graduate students. “The research will be used to help improved recovery and minimize impact of heavy and viscous oil production globally,” said Chris West, of BP’s unconventional oil technology group.
